How to Add Song Lyrics on Spotify
If you’re here, you’ve probably noticed that for some time now, Spotify allows you to view song lyrics synchronized with the music. This feature has been implemented in collaboration with the Musixmatch platform.
If you already have the musical production of your song distributed, playing on all platforms, and you’re interested in learning how to add song lyrics on Spotify (and consequently on all platforms affiliated with Musixmatch like Apple Music, Instagram, and Vevo), this tutorial will guide you through all the steps to achieve it.
If your song hasn’t been distributed yet, you may find our article on how to upload a song to Spotify helpful.
How to Register on Musixmatch Pro (User, Label, or Artist)
When accessing the Musixmatch platform (via web, app, or application for Mac or Windows), you can register in different ways: as a regular user (to add lyrics for others) or as an artist (or publisher/label to directly manage and oversee your song catalog).
- Register on the Musixmatch PRO platform as an artist (here’s the link: https://about.musixmatch.com/pro).
- Go to Get Started, then Sign up to create a new user account. Verify the account via email and log in to the platform.
- On the next screen, choose whether to manage lyrics on Spotify for a single artist’s catalog (1) or for multiple artists (2).
- Fill out the following form with your artist profile information and proceed.
- Then, provide the link to your Spotify artist profile and Apple Music profile. Submit the request.
- If there are no issues with your profile, you’ll instantly gain access to the editing section (using the previous link and clicking Get Started).
Fill Out Your Artist Profile on Musixmatch Pro
When you log into the platform, you can fill out your artist profile by selecting Profile.
Here, you can add a banner, profile picture, your official website, and links to your project’s social media. You can also indicate up to five related music styles before uploading lyrics for your songs.
Next, select the Music tab to start editing and synchronizing lyrics that will appear on Spotify, Instagram, Apple Music, and other associated platforms.
Add Song Lyrics to Musixmatch for Spotify
Within the Music section, the song list detected in your artist profiles should automatically appear. If any songs are missing, you can add them using the Add missing release option at the bottom to later include the lyrics.
Next, click on the song title to which you want to add the lyrics, and a new editing screen will open (top section: Edit). Here, you can write or paste the song’s lyrics.
(Important): There are specific writing rules you can learn in this platform course. It will help you understand the formatting, synchronize the lyrics, and access additional features. We recommend completing it before publishing to ensure your song’s lyrics appear correctly on Spotify or Instagram.
When adding the lyrics, always start each line with a capital letter and do not end lines with periods or commas. Write each sung phrase (even if repeated multiple times) and make sure to verify the lyrics while listening to the song to avoid errors (Musixmatch automatically plays the song at the bottom).
Synchronize Lyrics for Spotify or Instagram via Musixmatch
Once you’ve written the lyrics, click on the top Synchronize tab, where you can adjust the timing for each phrase of the song. You can also add instrumental sections of your track or online recording so that platforms like Spotify, Instagram, and Apple Music display them with a ♪ symbol on the screen.
Some tips:
- The song’s audio will play, allowing you to align each phrase’s timing using the down arrow on-screen or your keyboard.
- You can later fine-tune each start time using the + and – buttons. Phrases should start exactly with the vocals or half a second earlier.
- Instrumental parts lasting five seconds or longer should be marked with #instrumental on the next line of text.
Once you have the song lyrics correctly synchronized, click the Submit button. If there are no errors (which the platform may occasionally flag for correction), the lyrics will be processed by Musixmatch for streaming platforms like Spotify, Apple Music, Vevo, and even Instagram.
In our experience, the process may take several days or weeks to appear on Spotify. We recommend resubmitting if it doesn’t show up after a few days (luckily, it saves a draft with your changes). You can also synchronize lyrics via the Musixmatch mobile app. This alternative lets you sync text word by word and even add the song sections.
